Call for help: Dial your local emergency number immediately. If it's safe, check the injured person and offer basic first aid while waiting for help.

Help with obvious injuries: Apply pressure to stop bleeding and keep the person calm.

Position the person: If it's okay for their injuries, lay them down, raise and support their legs. You can also turn them to one side and loosen their clothing.

Keep them warm: Use a coat or blanket for warmth.

Don't give them food or drink.

Call emergency services if the person:

  • Is bleeding a lot
  • Is not responsive
  • Is not breathing
  • Has more than one injury
  • Has a serious injury in the spinal column, head, hip, pelvis, or thigh
