Who was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe? Quiz Answer

Who was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe?

The Correct answer is Jeanne Baret

Jeanne Baret (1740–1807) was a French botanist and explorer who is known for being the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. She was born in Autun, France, in 1740. Baret became the botanical assistant and companion to the French naturalist Philibert Commerson.

In 1766, Baret and Commerson joined Louis-Antoine de Bougainville's expedition on the ships La Boudeuse and Étoile, which aimed to circumnavigate the globe for scientific and exploratory purposes. To avoid breaking naval regulations that prohibited women on board, Jeanne Baret disguised herself as a man, taking on the identity of "Jean" Baret.

During the expedition, Baret made significant contributions to botany, collecting and identifying various plant specimens. Unfortunately, she faced many challenges due to her gender, and her true identity was eventually discovered during the journey. Despite this, Bougainville allowed her to continue with the expedition.
